The BMW 540i xDrive is finally coming to Canadian dealerships, but you’ll have to order one quickly if you want to get an un-electrified, six-cylinder version of BMW’s midsize sedan because the brand is only selling 151 of them in the country.
Slotting in between the 530i xDrive, which is powered by a 2.0L four-cylinder engine that makes 255 hp, and the 550e xDrive, which is powered by a plug-in hybrid inline-six that makes 483 hp, the 540i is powered by the same turbocharged 3.0L inline-six as the latter model, but without the electric motor.
As a result, it makes a respectable 375 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque, and is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. That allows the model to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds, and it's being billed as a back-to-basics throwback to the old school 5 Series models that built BMW's reputation for uncomplicated premium driving.

Unfortunately, the automaker has no plans to make the 540i xDrive a regular part of its regular lineup, BMW Canada spokesperson Jean-Francois Taylor told AutoTrader in an email. If you don’t get one of the 151 Legacy Edition models, you may not get another opportunity to get one at all.
Those who do manage to get their hands on one will be treated to a rather well-optioned model. All features are included in the MSRP, including 21-inch wheels, the M Sport Pro package, and a premium 18-speaker sound system. The only option buyers will have to select is the colour, and that might be a difficult choice because the brand’s special Individual Manufaktur colours (which normally cost between $5,000 and $6,000) are included in the MSRP, as is the heritage-inspired colour seen here: Maldives Blue II Metallic.
The 2026 BMW 540i xDrive Legacy Edition is available to order now, with deliveries starting on June 18.
